The load times can sometimes feel slow, is there anyway to make it load faster?

The load times depend on which iPhone version you happen to have, 3GS loads much faster than the first generation iPhone for instance. One thing to point out... the progress ring on the upper right of the interface shows you the actual load time, so if that ring is complete you can tap the screen anywhere and skip the loading sequence from that point.

Do I need to switch back to Main from Coax before choosing my ammunition type (AP or HE)?

Actually no, if you are in Coax you can click on either the HE or AP button and go directly to the main gun and your ammunition choice directly.
